Region

Kastilien-La Mancha

Castile, the realm of windmills, yields half of Spain’s wine produce. The enormous, flat, southern half of the large central Hispanic plateau presents Spain’s more extreme conditions: at altitudes of 500 to 700 m a.s.l. it gets extremely hot and dry during summer. While the landscape is lush and green in spring, in summer it turns dark-yellow and most of the river courses dry up. The predominant type of soil is red-brown, sandy, calcareous or clayey. Viticulture is made possible due to the soil’s ability to store even scarce quantities of water. A new generation of modern-day vintners is mainly cultivating the Airén white vine type and is focussed on a clean, authentic and mainly biological production.

Producer/Brand

Bodegas Arzuaga

Pursuing his love of wine, Florentino Arzuaga acquired the unique La Planta winery in Quintanilla de Onésimo in 1982. Along the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero where most of the famous wine cellars are located, this beautiful wine estate is perched on the hill of the Paramo. Due to the diverse flora and lush forests, the 150 hectare of vineyards enjoy a balanced climate and optimum growing conditions. Sunny days and cool nights allow mainly Tempranillo grapes of the highest quality to ripen here. Cultivated with great care, they produce complex, concentrated and dense wines in the unique manner of the Ribera del Duero terroir.
