Weingut Marugg is based on the northern edge of the winegrowing village of Fläsch. The estate comprises various plots at the foot of the Fläscherberg and Falknis mountains – an oasis of tranquillity where labour-intensive, hands-on viticulture is key to producing wines of outstanding quality.

Weingut Marugg was founded at the end of the 1960s. Daniel Marugg senior harvested his first grapes in 1976, bottling and releasing the resultant wine the following year. He quickly built a loyal customer base and was able to grow his production continually. Daniel (junior) and Monika Marugg took over the reins at this estate in the Bündner Herrschaft region of Graubünden in 1995. Since 1998, he and Monika have been marketing their wines under the name ‘Bovel’, which refers to the specific cadastral area in which the winery is situated. Bovel is the Romansh term for a grazing pasture.

Natural farming methods for quality

Technology is part and parcel of modern viticulture. It can make life easier and less strenuous for winegrowers, as Daniel Marugg is very much aware. Nevertheless, Daniel still believes that great wines are made in the vineyard. He applies natural farming methods and eschews artificial fertilisers and herbicides in order to enhance soil life and bring the vines into balance.

Perfectionism

Daniel is a perfectionist , and it is reassuring in this fast-paced day and age to witness the calm, serene manner in which he goes about his work. Wife Monika, a trained chef, ably assists. Thanks to her well-developed palate, she is able to provide her husband with valuable feedback. She and Daniel trust each other blind in their shared pursuit of perfection.
