Madère Sercial, Single Harvest, Henriques & Henriques - 2001

This rare Single Harvest 2001 is a colheita bottling, i.e. a vintage wine with extensive maturation, but of the oxxdative type (as opposed to the LBV). Bright and deep, this edition could easily be mistaken for a verdelho for its saline and smoky signature on the nose. More semi-dry than dry, its caramelised apricot, tangerine and almond flavours coat an impressive dry extract, the result of its prolonged maturation in canteiro.

Viticulture

Once owned by the Portuguese royal house, the former Henriques & Henriques company is now owned by British John Cossart. For 53 years his father was the director and cellar master of the company and in 1978, after the death of the last Henriques who had no successor, he became the majority owner. With 15 hectares, Henriques & Henriques is the largest wine producer on Madeira Island.

Oenology

The oldest wine in the world, Madeira is usually sold without a vintage. The best qualities are aged for 10 years or more in oak barrels before being put on the market.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Drink it with a citrus dessert or on its own, as a meditation wine, perhaps accompanied by a large cigar.
