Montagne St-Emilion, Les Terres Blanches, Baudon - 2021

The latest cuvée to come out of the Baudon couple’s cellar, Terres Blanches celebrates the dominant limestone in all its diversity for a saline, scintillating wine with hints of pepper and blueberry that offers a unique energy on the palate. Young as it is, the structure is still tight, but if you decant it or wait a year or two, you’ll see the fruit vibrate. Vinifera: 90-92/100; Terre de Vins: 91-92/100; Vinous: 90/100; Jeb Dunnuck: 90/100; Decanter: 90/100

Viticulture

This small 2.87 hectare estate was immediately converted to organic farming, using biodynamic practices. The soil is nourished by sowing cereals and legumes and is worked on horseback. He produces 2 cuvées, each bearing the name of its own terroir, with each parcel harvested separately according to soil and subsoil in order to get a precise expression of the limestone and clay. This cuvée is the result of a blend of intra-parcel selections where the white marl and limestone express themselves on the southern slopes.

Oenology

A 100% Merlot wine, harvested by hand and vinified with 50% maceration of the stalks and a gentle, long extraction with punching down at the heart of fermentation. Malolactic fermentation in barrels and ageing for 14 months in 225 and 400 litre barrels with 30% new wood. Production: 5500 bottles.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Braised beef with mushrooms • Confit quail and oyster mushrooms.

By now you're familiar with this 'coup de coeur' domaine, which we had the pleasure of discovering last year during the week of the Primeurs. Since then, we've visited them and imported their first wines, which are the three cuvées we're offering you today. The Vin de France Red is hot is a sulphur-free wine without reproach, breaking with the codes of Bordeaux with its Burgundian-shaped bottle and screw cap. It surprised us with its fullness and precision, which are rare for natural wines. As for the Montagne Saint-Emilion, Terres blanches expresses the finesse, tension and freshness of the predominantly chalky soils, while Terre brunes expresses the smoothness of the clay, with an extra touch of youthful deliciousness. An estate that will be talked about in Bordeaux...
