Morgon Côte du Py James, Jean-Marc Burgaud - 2020

This cuvée of terroir - decomposed schist rich in iron oxide - and old vines is one of the most renowned in Beaujolais. It reaches here a level that we did not expect: a racy, ripe and deep nose of peony, black fruits and liquorice. Ideal volume and grace on the palate, great follow-through, draped tannins delivering a noble and spicy flavour. Long, sappy, it asserts itself as a truly great wine! Guide Vert RVF : 95/100

Viticulture

JM Burgaud produced his first Morgon in 1989. Accumulating parcels over time, this tireless worker now owns nearly 20 hectares of Gamay. His James cuvée comes from the best terroir of Morgon, the Côte du Py, but above all from old vines located at the top of the ancient volcano, looking south, on a decomposing schist soil. For the record, this wine is named after the famous secret agent of whom the winemaker is a fan!

Oenology

Traditional Beaujolais vinification in whole bunches, 15-day vatting period, alcoholic fermentation in vats, then maturing in non-new oak barrels from great Burgundy estates for 12 months.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Terrines - Saucisson en croûte - A roast farm chicken with tarragon - Veal quasi with mushrooms - Cheeses (St-Nectaire for example).
