The Tenuta di Biserno 2018 Lodovico shows a high degree of focus and sharpness in this vintage that was not always easy given some extra rain showers. This full-bodied Tuscan red is vertical and very intense while maintaining a careful sense of balance and aromatic equilibrium all the while. It shows big, black intensity with lots of fruit thickness and layering. The wine strikes at that proverbial and elusive crossroads between power and elegance. The blend sees mostly Cabernet Franc, with smaller parts Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Sattes Rubin mit feinem violettfarbenem Schimmer. Kompakte, fleischige Nase mit Noten nach Kardamom, ein Hauch Zimt, viel Brombeere und Cassis. Im Ansatz sehr geschliffen, zeigt viel feinmaschiges Tannin, nach Brombeere und Tabak, im Finale grün-würzige Noten, die den Trinkfluss etwas dämpfen.

Produced since 2007 in Bibbona, bordering Bolgheri, Lodovico is a relatively young label managed by Lodovico Antinori. Annual production is below 10,000 bottles, and the exact blend is not revealed. Cabernet Franc-based, blended with tiny amounts of Merlot and Petit Verdot, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged 16 months in barrique, with notably less racking compared to an equivalent Bordeaux. The 2018 is not completely representative (try the outstanding and more concentrated 2016), but it describes fairly well the graceful, Margaux-like elegance of this SuperTuscan. Parma Violets, cedar, eucalyptus, wild raspberry and coffee grounds outline its complexity. Silky tannins are integrated with refreshing acidity.

Lush and spicy, even if the flavors of plum, blackberry and fruitcake are a bit muddled. Nonetheless, this is a soft, harmonious red, with accents of wild herbs, graphite and loam. Ends with a light grain to the tannins. Cabernet Franc. Not imported into the U.S. Drink now through 2035.

Beautiful aromas of currants, sage and other fresh herbs follow through to a full body with round, creamy tannins. Enticing texture and luscious fruit character. Very balanced and refined. Pretty now, but will be better in 2023 and onwards.
